I thought I was being
responsible on the hand shown below but not for the first time I got it all
wrong.

In
response to my partner’s 1S opener I downgraded my hand thinking the two jacks
would probably be of little value. How wrong I was! What is more I misplayed
the hand by ducking clubs twice, giving the defence the opportunity to switch
to hearts. (Although that would be very unlikely on the actual hand.) By
winning the second club I could take a finesse in diamonds knowing that the
most the defenders could take would be one diamond trick and maybe three clubs,
while I could make five spades, one heart, two diamonds and a club. And if I
had responded 2D initially partner would have rebid 2NT, raised to game by me
and laydown on the likely diamond lead.
