Grave Doubts

2nd April–Board 13. Game All. Dealer North.
There is much more to playing transfers than is obvious at first sight and the hand below demonstrates just that.

North:
S K 10 8 3
H A 3
D A 7 6
C J 8 7 4

West:
S J 6 5 4
H 9 5
D Q J 9 3
C K 5 2

East:
S A 9 7 2
H J 7 4
D 10 4 2
C 9 6 3

South:
S Q
H K Q 10 8 6 2
D K 8 5
C A Q 10

  West
 North
  East
  South

    No
     2D

     2H
    No
     4H

For once the bidding is straightforward, for realistically South should harbour grave doubts about slam possibilities. With at least eight hearts between the two hands South simply transfers and raises to game and eleven tricks will roll in with the loss of just a spade and a club. Give South the ace of spades instead of the queen however and it is a very different story. Now a small slam looks a distinct possibility and South should start now by bidding 3H at his first turn, setting the suit and demanding a cue-bid from partner unless he has only two small trumps. On the actual hand North will bid 4D and a check up on key cards will enable the slam to be bid efficiently  - and easily.

  1. In what circumstances would it be right to for S to go direct to 4H? I did that thinking that with the stronger hand I wanted to be declarer (concealing my singleton QS), and might even get a jackpot club lead. Chris A

  2. That's a good point Chris but I suppose that if partner broke the transfer to 2H - showing a suitable hand - then you might still be able to explore for a slam. Usually you just blast game when you think there is a possibility of the opponents coming in if you don't. This is particularly true if you have hearts when you cut out the ability of the opposition to bid 2S over the 2D transfer.
