26th February – Board 3. East/West Game.
Dealer South.
Pity poor North on the
featured hand who was more or less doomed to go wrong from the word go!

A
beginner might lead the six of diamonds – ‘4th best partner’ - but
not you or me. In fact North is more or less endplayed from the start. The
normal card from that spade holding would be the 5 and that picks up the whole
suit, a heart gives declarer a free finesse, a top diamond blocks the suit and
a club gives declarer five tricks in the suit. If North cashes his diamonds
declarer has nine tricks with the established eight while if he doesn’t it is
an easy matter for declarer to find an extra trick in either of the rounded
suits.
