When To Stop

5th March – Board 13. Game All. Dealer North.
I bet too many pairs got too high on the hand shown below when maybe East lost sight of the fact that he had already shown a good hand….

North:
S 8 7 5
H 10 6 3
D A K J 9
C 9 7 3

West:
S J 10 9 4
H 7 6
D Q 8 7
C A 6 5 4

East:
S A 3
H A Q J 4
D 4 2
C K Q J 10 2

South:
S K Q 6 2
H K 9 8 2
D 10 6 5 3
C 8

  West
 North
  East
  South

     No
    1C
    No
     1S
     No
    2H
    No
     3C
    End

The notion of reversing still remains a mystery to many although I do not know why. Suffice it to say that East shows a strong hand when he rebids 2H over his partner’s 1S response and should pass the conversion to 3C. Generally, after a response at the one-level, a reverse by opener is forcing only to 2NT or suit agreement and here West has done nothing wrong to introduce the spade suit and palpably nothing wrong in supporting clubs. In other words East mustn’t show his good hand twice and must instead know when to stop.
