26th February – Board 23. Game All. Dealer
South.
It’s not often that a hand
comes up where it is so difficult to find the right bid but so easy to find the
wrong one. Today’s hand is a case in point and I offer my solution with no
great conviction. If any of you have any bright ideas please feel free to tell
me.

People
will accuse me of being fanciful and maybe I am but I know two things. Firstly
that North hand is miles too good to sign off in 4H and secondly 4NT is a
non-starter because you might get a reply committing you to the six level with
two aces missing. An idea which has some appeal is just to bid 5H describing a
hand too good to bid 4H and that would of course impel South to bid the slam
holding three aces. Another more scientific idea is to bid 3C and over the
expected 3NT retreat to 4H. Again this must show a hand too good to bid 4H
itself. It takes confidence and trust in partner. But we all have that. No?
