12th February – Board 1. Love All. Dealer
North.
Quite often we make a bid
that is purely designed to make matters less bad, without any real hope of
making things completely better. But sometimes we do!

With
the opponents known to hold as many high cards as your side South would be
quite correct in using Stayman with his modest holding in an attempt to give
his partner a helping hand. The best that can happen is for you to discover a
4-4 heart fit but even if partner responds 2S, as here, you have three card
support and ruffing values. And of course if partner bids 2D you know you have
at least seven diamonds between the two hands with the likelihood of having
many more. Note that East is not in the protective position and it is hard for
West to compete. In fact 1NT or 2C is their limit. Ideally East would lead a
trump against 2S and that would result in a one trick defeat but in reality who
could resist a top club? Even if East switches to a trump now declarer can
arrange for one ruff on the table and come to eight tricks, losing just two
trumps, a diamond and two clubs. And of course 1NT is dead in the water.
