It
really shouldn’t be too difficult to bid to 6S although West might pretend for
a while that diamonds were going to be trumps and in the normal course of
events this would be absolutely cast-iron. But when North doubles – the
so-called ‘Lightner double’ named after its inventor – asking for an unusual
lead that might – should – alert East to the danger, causing him to run to 6NT
which has nothing but twelve tricks to commend it. Maybe North should not
double though because surely his partner can work out the diamond situation….
It’s a tricky one.
