2S
is a Michael’s cue bid showing spades and a minor but you have to be in harmony
with partner as to what sort of strength is to be expected. At favourable
vulnerability it should be weak but at adverse vulnerability – as here – it
should be around an opening hand. North’s 3H is weak because with a good hand
he can bid 2S to show a full-blooded raise in hearts but now East, knowing his
partner has values, can double. On a spade lead this should go a comfortable
two off, making North’s attempt at intimidation rather a damp squib!!
