12th April – Board 13. Game All. Dealer
North.
Disappointingly only one
pair bid to the good heart slam on the board featured below but it really
shouldn’t have been that difficult.

Once
South has shown a five-card heart suit North is surely justified in bidding
game and he might as well do it by bidding 4D, a splinter showing a singleton
in the suit. South now should be charmed as he has the ideal holding in that
suit, plus an extra trump and a club stop should that suit be led. So
everyone’s favourite convention it is and with enough key-cards the slam is
bid. There should be no difficulty in the play of course with declarer coming
to 2 spades, 5 hearts, 1 diamond and 2 ruffs and 2 clubs.
