3rd November – Board 19. East/West Game.
Dealer South.
Quite often it is
imperative to be able to distinguish between a poor hand and a reasonable hand
when forced to bid by partner.

West
would like to have had four spades for his double but it would be feeble to
pass and there really is no other option but to double. After North passes East
is compelled to bid and most players would use lebensohl in this situation:
with a poor hand you bid 2NT which partner has to convert to 3C which you
either pass if that is your suit or convert to whatever your suit happens to
be. So here 3D shows some values although it is not forcing, leaving West to
ask about a heart stop for 3NT – and East is happy to oblige.
