3rd November – Board 10. Game All. Dealer
East.
It is very rare these days
to let anyone play quietly in a two-level contract without putting up some sort
of fight, as the hand below testifies.

Once
North has shown a weak hand by his pass of 2H East should realise that the
points are more or less evenly spread and breathe life back into the auction by
balancing with a double. West would be happy to bid 2S and eight tricks are an
easy make. Of course South – with his four-card heart support - might bid 3H but this fails by a
trick and a positive score (2H) has been converted into a negative one.
