Don’t you just hate it when
things don’t turn out the way they should?

I
can’t tell you how much I hate that 3D opening bid! It is much too strong for
one thing and you could easily play in 3D with 4S – or even 6S – cold! (I would
wait and see, although West would bid diamonds and East show spades so that
would shut me up!) After 3D West has a difficult choice but it would be timid
to pass and double risks partner getting carried away with the majors so 3NT
would be my choice. This is a dreadful contract but nevertheless is impregnable
and the only thing the preempt has achieved is to drive the opponents into a
game they would never have bid. Of course that didn’t happen as West did double and East did get carried away in the majors and South was not hoist with his own petard.
