Icy Calm

28th July – Board 13. Game All. Dealer North.
It’s all too easy to get carried away sometimes when we ‘wish’ our partner to hold the right cards but then is the time to remain level-headed.

North:
S 4
H A Q 9 7 6 3
D K J 9 3
C 10 2

West:
S 10 9 8
H K 2
D 5 4
C Q 9 7 5 4 3

East:
S A K Q 5 3 2
H 5 4
D A Q 8 7 6
C none

South:
S J 7 6
H J 10 8
D 10 2
C A K J 8 6

  West
 North
  East
  South

    1H
    1S
   2C
     No
    2H
    3D
   3H
     No
    No
    3S
  End

If you are tempted to bid 4S over 1H I would understand that (because I would be tempted myself) but when you realise that partner needs little for 6D to be a make it surely must be better to go slowly. North might of course bid 2D at his second turn but a good rule of thumb with a 6-4 hand is to repeat the six-carder with a weak hand but bid the four-card suit with better than minimum. East tries and tries to get some support from partner and although he is close to bidding 4S the fact that his only major asset is not liable to win a trick must necessitate caution. Nine tricks is the limit of the hand against anything but bizarre defence.
