14th July – Board 4. Game All.
Dealer West.
In a strange sort of way
the opposition bidding made things a lot easier for North who in the final
analysis had to show fine judgement.

Without
any opposition bidding the final contract would undoubtedly have been 1S but as
it happens North had the opportunity to show all three of his suits when the
opposition bid and supported clubs. More than that he could afford to make a
slam try of 4C when his partner bid diamonds and in fact if South had held the
ace of diamonds rather than the unwanted ace of clubs then slam would have been
heavy odds on.
