21st April – Board 8. Love All. Dealer West.
I though I was being clever
on the featured hand but as happens so often dummy was a big disappointment.

I
give the bidding as it happened, not as it necessarily should have gone, and
while it is hard to find fault with the opponents’ bidding and certainly not my
partner’s, I suppose there are some who might think my action as West was a
little over the top. Well I defend myself on the grounds that I could always
retreat to diamonds if things got hairy and the lure of the double fit was just
too tempting. In my imagination partner had something like
S
Axxx H xxx D AKxxx C x when both 4H and 4S would have been easy makes, but even
one or two down would have shown a profit if 4H makes. In reality 4H is
probably one down although there is a way it can make, as Deep Finesse tells
us. 4S was two down and 4 imps away.
