18th February – Board 20. Game All. Dealer
West.
Bidding what you think
partner wants to hear is a good maxim although it probably wouldn’t have made
much difference on the featured hand if South had ploughed his own furrow, for
a while at least.

In
case you are wondering what a jump bid over a no-trump opening is like look no
further than that North hand which is just about spot on. (Although some I know
would chance their arm with a leap to game.) South must think there are an awful
lot of points in the pack but the logical bid is to raise hearts although I
dare say there are some who would introduce the spade suit. No matter, for
North will revert to his own plan with pleasing results but notice if a really
obstinate South insists on doing things his own way he will end up with not
only a negative result but also with the need to find a new partner.
