17th September – Board 15. North/South Game.
Dealer South.
It is a mistake to get too
scientific in the auction when there is a much more suitable bid available as
the following hand shows.

What
North bids over the 1D opening is largely a matter of style but these days the
tendency is to bid a five card suit and then later back in with a double to
show extra strength and overall support for any unbid suits. That would
certainly be my choice but whatever North chooses to do East should eschew
supporting diamonds as a waste of time and bid the much more descriptive 1NT
which in these circumstances always shows about 8 or 9 points. West would have
an obvious raise to game and ten tricks are easily available. It is true that
5D would also make but that requires a favourable position of the ace of
spades, which the no-trump game does not.
