30th July – Board 17. Love All. Dealer North.
Weak twos are designed to
make things difficult for the opposition but sometimes there is no difficulty
at all. At least there shouldn’t be.

North
has an exceptionally good hand for a weak two but nevertheless it is clearly
the right opening bid. But what should East do? It would be feeble to pass and
‘double’ is out of the question with only two spades so 2NT it is – showing
about 15+ to 18- points. West should obviously look for a spade fit via Stayman
and when none is forthcoming settle for the no-trump game. 5D would also make
it is true but is not such a good contract, for imagine South to hold the queen
of diamonds doubleton instead of North. Then three rounds of hearts would
promote a trump trick for the defence.
