Just because you have the
opportunity to use a gadget doesn’t mean you have to. Quite often something
better is at hand.

It
seems obvious to me that South should double 1NT with such a fine lead and
indeed declarer is likely to go a bucket load down if he fails to locate the
position of the club queen, as he most probably will. I know that N/S can make
5D but it’s hardly easy to bid. Just suppose South bids 2C, showing hearts and
another. North will bid 2D denying three or more hearts but what is South
supposed to do then? Raising to 3D is about the only feasible way forward but
that’s asking a lot for North to continue, especially when his partner has
shown a limited hand by not doubling in the first place.
