Maybe South was being a
little too pushy on the hand shown below but it wasn’t so hard to envisage a
slam once partner had shown a five-card suit and the opposition had shown
values in hearts.

North’s
1S bid shows at least five cards because with only four he would start by
making a Sputnik double. Now from South’s point of view a slam might certainly
be on the cards facing an unlimited partner who is likely to hold few values in
hearts. As it happens North is minimum on all counts and the queen of hearts is
surely wasted values causing a retreat to just game. Even that is not exactly
laydown but the friendly club position should ensure success.
