14th Feb – Board 14: Love All. Dealer East. South had an awful choice of overcalls on the featured hand after his right hand opponent had opened 1NT and while it could certainly turn out badly at least the recommended bid was a fairly good approximation to the hand held.
I have a natural antipathy to opening 1NT on a hand with two aces and two queens all in different suits but I plough a lone furrow. So assuming East does open 1NT what is poor South supposed to do? Any bid of a minor at low level is conventional and higher-level bids below game level are preemptive. You might start with a penalty double but someone somewhere is going to bid spades and then things will get even more tangled so I come to the conclusion that the best bet is to give partner the choice of which minor to play in albeit at the five level. As things are that works out fine with 5
♣ a spread but my worry is that with Qx in diamonds and xx in clubs partner will choose the former suit to play in and that is not the best. Perhaps it is all too hard.
