14th Feb – Board 10: Game All. Dealer East.
The weak two is an important gambit I believe and should be included into everyone’s game. Not only that but it pays to be a bit flexible.
You might argue that West’s 2♠ is a little on the thin side, and so it is, but nevertheless it is the right decision. After all West knows that the opposition have the values for game as his partner has already passed and should take the opportunity given to derail them. What is more it is very hard indeed to punish such a manoeuvre with practically every double these days being for take-out. But with a curious irony such tactics will almost certainly propel the opposition into a non-making game that they most likely would not have bid otherwise! Given a free run North would open 1♠ and should pass his partner’s 1NT response with such a ghastly 16 count. It is true that North/South have the magic 25 but any game is truly awful.
