There is no doubt that
playing weak twos in the majors or their equivalent is a useful gadget in
anyone’s bridge armoury. East doubtless felt frustrated when he picked up the
hand shown below and maybe he felt his side was being conned out of a contract
but the truth is that nothing he could say was really ideal.
A selection of hands from our No Fear Thursday club which I think are interesting. Please add your comments at the end of any post. If you wish to join us please contact david.huggett1@btinternet.com or phone 07867617242.
Not Ideal
26th April – Board 17: Love All. Dealer North.
There is no doubt that East would like to bid at his first turn and the only bid that has any appeal at all is to double. The trouble with that of course is that West might get carried away with a four-card spade suit – as indeed he would - with dire consequences. The only other option is to back in at his second turn with 4NT, for the minors of course, but that could be disastrous if his partner bids diamonds with only a three-card suit. So in all probability North/South would have things to themselves, racking up an easy game in the process, and an opportunity would go begging for the other side. 5♣ doesn’t make of course and could go two down on perfect defence but that would require second sight for the defenders. But in any case I imagine that North/South would drive on to the five-level.
