I’m not sure that any pair
reached the top spot of 6♦ on the hand shown below, but the slam is an
excellent one and much better than 6♠ which requires some luck in the spade
department.

No Wasted Values
19th April – Board 5: N/S Game. Dealer North.
The key bid here is 4♥, showing as it does a strong hand with good diamond support and a singleton or void heart. North would probably be not that interested at first and retreat to 4♠ but when partner cue-bids the ace of clubs the hand suddenly becomes a giant. With no wasted values in hearts and with the king of clubs now pulling its weight a jump to 6♦ is fully justified. In 6♦ the potentially losing spade in the North hand can be pitched on the ace of clubs, making the contract a virtual certainty.
