5th April – Board 4. Game All. Dealer West.
Defensive high-level bids
are a real nuisance but such an integral part of the game these days as the
hand below demonstrates.

I
think 3S is enough on those North cards, being vulnerable and in any event
7-2-2-2 hands are always a disappointment in my view. West must open with a
double, mainly for take-out although partner can of course leave it in with a
trump stack. That doesn’t apply here so 4C it is and West is worth a cue-bid in
case partner has a slightly better hand than he has. 6C can make with a few
good views but any pair that makes game should feel pleased but note that 3NT
is a non-starter. If East leaves the double of 3S in his side will only collect
a meagre 200.
