The
bidding was exemplary, especially that double of 3NT, which demands an unusual
lead and is usually the first suit bid by dummy. With the ace in declarer’s
long suit it was imperative to get partner to lead a heart but as so often
happens partner failed to oblige and led the diamond two instead. Maybe the
thwarting of the plan caused East to take his eye off the ball for a moment
because declarer won in dummy and led a club. Quite rightly East stepped in
with the ace and played two rounds of hearts in an effort to promote a trump
trick for partner but, alas, to no avail. It’s not easy to see perhaps but
another diamond would have cut declarer off from his long suit and the defence
would have won a spade in the end game.
