I
really can’t fault West doubling 4S on his hand but what is poor East to do? As
it happens 5H would ‘only’ cost 500 while 4S doubled costs -990 on best defence
and -1190 with a slip up. The double of 4S is neither for take-out nor for
penalties but just shows a good hand and for those who think it imprudent to
bid at all just imagine that the North and East hands are transposed. Now 4S
still makes via nine spades and a club while 6H or 6D are both cold the other
way. Try explaining your silence to your teammates now!
