will bid 2NT either directly, (my choice), or via 2C or a multi or whatever
system you happen to play. (I know it’s only 20 points but those tens and the
five-card suit make it so much better.) At any rate the action passes to East
who has a problem. He can show five spades via a transfer or he can enquire if
partner has a five-card heart suit by bidding 3C – but he can’t do both. Or can
he? Lots of players these days play that if partner makes a transfer bid over a
2NT opener then opener bids 3NT with just two of the requested major but with
five of the other major. As here. Ironically in this case 3NT makes the same
ten tricks as 4H so maybe a little knowledge is a dangerous thing.
