Too Hard

14th January – Board 23. Game All. Dealer South.
As mentioned many times before, decisions at the 5-level are notoriously difficult to get right on a regular basis and the hand shown below was no exception.

North:
S 5 4 3 2
H 9 2
D K 9 4 2
C J 5 3

West:
S 8 5
H K J 8 6 5 4
D Q 10
C Q 9 4

East:
S K Q J 9 7
H A Q 10 7
D J 8 6 5
C none

South:
S A 10
H 3
D A 7 3
C A K 10 8 7 6 2

  West
 North
  East
  South

    2C
     2H
     No
     4H
    5C
     No
     No
    ???

South is so right to bid 5C because 4H is cold but just see how hard it is for East to double that contract which is two off trivially. Nevertheless -500 for North/South is par but I have a sneaky feeling I would be bidding 5H on that East hand which is one off in top tricks – assuming the defence takes them!
