No Rush

12th November – Board 23. Game All. Dealer South.
It’s all to easy to get a rush of blood to the head when partner opens and you have a good hand but more often than not it pays to go slowly.

It might look tempting to force with 3D in response to partner’s opening but it is never right to force with a two-suiter, for reasons which I am sure you can work out. So 2D it is and when partner shows a second suit you now really need to know more and you can do just that by invoking fourth suit forcing – game forcing when it is made at the three-level. Partner might be able to give secondary diamond support or bid no-trumps or show a two-suiter as he will do here, but whatever the case you will now be in a position to re-evaluate your hand. Knowing partner has at most three cards in your two suits is bad news but with every suit well stopped the no-trump game is really the only one to consider. In actual fact even that contract might be in jeopardy if diamonds broke badly and there was no easy route to the North hand.
