The
1NT promised 15-17 points and 2C was Stayman and West quite rightly proceeded
to game after the 2H response, for after all if his partner held a four-card
spade suit as well as the hearts she could always convert to 4S. Knowing that
West held a four-card spade suit and East a four-card heart suit a more
circumspect South might look no further than the lead of a low club, or even
the diamond queen but the only lead that works is the five of spades and South
found it! Partner co-operated by playing the nine at trick one and in no time
at all his side had collected four spade tricks and the ace of hearts.
