Strangely
enough the only game East/West can make is 4S but that is hard to reach in view
of South’s opening! The correct lead for these low-level doubles is a trump but
West can hardly be blamed on this particular occasion for failing to come up
trumps so to speak and I suppose the natural defence is to lead the diamond
king – asking for count – and to switch to a low club. The most likely upshot of
all this is that declarer will find himself three down and conceding a penalty
of 500 but even two down would provide a healthy score for East/West. Of course
South might remove himself to 2C which should be doubled by West and which
would also provide a fruitful score, although much more fraught I dare say.
