North might wade in with 3C I suppose  - 2C being artificial – but opposite a passed hand at love all this looks a bit doubtful so it is likely that E/W will get a free run. East has the sort of hand that is difficult to define, for transferring to spades and then passing is a bit feeble while transferring to spades and then bidding 3D is too bullish, being game forcing. However partner can always help by breaking the transfer whenever suitable and breaking to a worthless doubleton is a really good idea. So 3D here says ‘I have four card spade support and a hand that might produce game on minimum values and by the way I have two little diamonds.’ Here East is bound to accept the invitation, maybe hoping for the ace of diamonds to be favourably placed or for there to be no trump loser. In any event the game is well within the bounds of acceptability.
