It’s hard to see that South
did very much wrong on the featured hand below but the result was certainly
inelegant.

South’s
1S overcall looks perfectly normal but the consequences were horrific! West
doubled – for take-out, showing hearts and longer clubs with diamond tolerance
– and East was charmed to pass. West led his singleton trump to stop declarer
making any low ruffs and in the end poor declarer could make nothing but three
trump tricks for an 800 point penalty. The hand is instructive though for two
points. Firstly you need good intermediates in the trump suit when passing for
penalties and secondly that trump lead is more or less mandatory.
