16th April–Board 4. Game All. Dealer West.
‘Never open bad suits in
bad hands’ is a useful adage that has stood the test of time, although nowadays
the ‘bid at all cost’ attitude is more prevalent. Put me down in the former
camp though.

I
dare say I am one of the few people who would not open that West hand but I do
not believe it matters much. Partner will open a heart and South will bid a
spade and now I think West should ignore the diamonds again and bid 2NT, giving
East an easy raise to game. It is true that 5D would probably make – but not on
a club lead – although 3NT is so much better. Playing a strong no-trump, which
I would really advise when vulnerable, East would open 1NT and West would raise
to 3NT.
