4th December – Board 20. Game All. Dealer
West.
The weak no-trump is fast
losing popularity when vulnerable and looking at the hand below it is not hard
to see why.

It
shouldn’t matter that North has a distributional hand because longer suits make
greater numbers of tricks! East has nowhere to go and any attempt at a rescue
manoeuvre would end in even greater disaster so failure to double would be a
missed opportunity. Playing a strong no-trump West would open a club most
likely and North would doubtless wade in with a two-suited overcall, which
would probably end with South declaring 3NT. An easy make of course but nowhere
near as good as collecting at least 800 from 1NT doubled.
