7th August – Board 12: North/South
Game. Dealer West.
Everybody’s favourite
contract ended well on the featured deal due to the truly benign disposition of
the heart suit, although I can’t help wondering whether it wouldn’t have been
wiser to take out some insurance.

On
the likely spade lead North can make no fewer than twelve tricks with the
friendly lie in the heart suit but just imagine what would happen if the heart
finesse had failed! Now declarer would make no heart tricks instead of six
because there is no quick way back to dummy. What is more South should realise
from the bidding that his partner is likely to have a singleton heart at most
and perhaps should insist on the heart game for that very reason. Note also
that South’s 3H bid is encouraging but not forcing so that North is showing
extra values by bidding on over it.
