10th July – Board 3: East/West Game. Dealer
South.
I enjoy defending more than
any other aspect of the game, because you and partner have to work in total
harmony. That’s the theory anyway.

Any
old bidding sequence will get you to 3NT and let us suppose that West kicks off
with the two of hearts. Declarer may well play low from dummy and if as East
you contribute the jack you will have handed declarer his contract on a plate.
Much better to play the seven giving declarer options he doesn’t want later;
indeed playing the jack will only gain if partner has led specifically from
AQxx. So declarer will win with the queen and most likely play on diamonds,
eventually losing to the queen with West. Now West can play a further low heart
and declarer is on a guess. If he chooses to play the ten, assuming East
started with A87, then he will be defeated as the defenders can now take three
hearts, a diamond and a club.
