19th June – Board 4: Game All. Dealer West.
Quite often you have to be
careful not to make a bid which leads partner with nowhere to go.

Many
people might open that West hand with a weak 2H but that is ghastly and for
that matter so is 3C by North although that is what I imagine did happen at
several tables. A knee-jerk reaction by South would be to bid 3S, forcing of
course, but unless North has some measure of support he may well have to fall
back on rebidding his long suit and thus bypassing the most likely making
contract of 3NT. So that is what South should bid himself and with the clubs
behaving so well a delighted declarer will come to all thirteen tricks on a non
diamond lead.
