28th May – Board 3: East/West Game. Dealer
South.
The smaller cards in the
pack are called the impletion and the better the impletion the more your hand
is worth. The following hand shows how sometimes they can be worth their weight
in gold.

Those
good intermediate cards just about make it worthwhile for South to give a jump
raise after which North can hardly do less than bid 3NT. With such a beguiling
sequence East would be hard-pressed not to lead the queen of diamonds but that,
alas, makes the contract cast-iron. If West plays the king then the nine in
dummy becomes a second stop while if he doesn’t the suit becomes blocked when
East takes the lead with the ace of clubs. Note that declarer must not hold-up
in diamonds for if he does that he untangles the blockage for East/West. Of
course East would have defeated the contract by the lead of a low diamond but
that is pure hindsight and would be next to impossible to find at the table.
