The
auction shown above is entirely reasonable and certainly occurred at least
once. West will obviously lead his singleton spade, which East will win with
the nine but who now has a choice of which spade to return. With more interest
in diamonds – the higher ranking suit outside of spades and hearts – he should
return his highest winning spade i.e. the ace and follow up with the king which
West can ruff high before dummy and lead a diamond for another ruff. If East
had wanted a club return he should play the queen of spades at trick two,
followed by the ten, a clear desire for a club switch. Not really that difficult
once you think of it.
