Changing Horses

3rd April – Board 18: North/South Game. Dealer East.
3NT should always be defeated on the hand shown below but the optimum defence is really hard to find.

North:
S 9 2
H 9 5 3 2
D 6 5 2
C K Q 9 5

West:
S 10 5
H J 10 8
D K Q 7
C 10 8 7 4 3

East:
S A K J 6 4
H Q 7
D A J 10 4
C A 6

South:
S Q 8 7 3
H A K 6 4
D 9 8 3
C J 2

  West
 North
  East
  South

    1S
    No
     1NT
    No
    3NT
   End

If West declares 3NT then North might lead either a heart or a club I would imagine. Suppose he leads the CK. Declarer should duck (if he doesn’t South must unblock the jack) but if now North continues with another club the contract is unbeatable. Declarer has no choice but to win, cross to hand with a diamond and run the ten of spades. South will win but has no way back to his partner’s hand, holding as he does both top hearts. In fact North has to switch to a heart at trick two as does South if North leads a low club and South wins with the jack. If East declares 3NT then South would lead a top heart but has to switch to the jack of clubs at trick two which declarer must duck. Whereupon South switches back to hearts! I suspect even the best pair in the world would get that wrong.
