30th January – Board 4: Game All. Dealer
West.
You have to be alert at all
times as the following hand shows for maybe East thought he had nothing to
worry about. As it was he was fixed in the bidding but had to make sure that
his judgment wasn’t affected during the play.

Annoyingly
for East he can do little but double North’s barrage, which goes a long way
from attaining the best result – 6C! – played by his partner. The king of
hearts should be led, asking for count, and after two heart tricks have been
won East has to be careful not to play a third round but switch to a club
instead. See what happens if he woodenly continues with a third heart. Declarer
ruffs, enters dummy with the seven of trumps and leads the king of diamonds.
West will cover but declarer ruffs, plays a trump to the ten and pitches a club
on the diamond queen. And that would be the final straw for a disconsolate
East.
