28th November – Board 23: East/West
Game. Dealer East.
It struck me that I would
have opened that East hand with 4H having as I did an extra heart, although on
the hand in question that would not have been a winning move.

End

In a
desperate effort to reassure myself that 4H was the winning bid in the long run I attempted to calculate
the expected gain by so doing and although my addled brain was not functioning
as well it might with so many grey cells fleeing by the second I did, with the
knowledge of a few percentages, come to the conclusion that there was nothing
much in it at all. However that assumed perfect defence and although on the
hand in question it would be easy for South to lob out a couple of big spades
he then has to switch to a club and on a different layout altogether that might
not be so easy to find. So put me down for 4H and let me explain afterwards why
I was right!
