22nd August – Board 23: Game All. Dealer
South.
Sometimes you have to be
aware of what partner hasn’t bid to lead you to the right conclusion although
in the featured hand some Wests made life too difficult for their partner.

West
really has a standout bid of 1NT over the 1C opening, showing as it does a hand
in the 15+ to 18- range with a good stop in the opponent’s suit. But just
imagine that you overcall 1D and with the hand on your left silent partner
responds 1S. What now? 1S is encouraging but not forcing because the overcall
hand might be relatively weak and although a bid of 1NT might seem to fit the
bill you would actually only need about 12-14 points to do that simply because
you hadn’t overcalled 1NT in the first place and therefore cannot have as much
as sixteen. If I had chosen to bid 1D then over 1S I would bid 3NT or perhaps 4S because the
values for game must be there.
