16th May – Board 11: Love All. Dealer South.
The following hand can
hardly be said to make the pulse race yet it does contain a point of bidding
theory which might be overlooked.

Some
people I am sure might be tempted to respond 2H with that East hand after
partner has opened 1S but thinking ahead should show that that is wrong. Why?
Well on every non-flat minimum hand with less than three hearts opener will be
forced into rebidding his spades with only a five card suit with the result
that the opponents will start with more trumps than declarer – something to be
avoided at all cost. The corollary to this is that opener holding a minimum
hand with a 5-2-3-3 or 5-2-4-2 shape should pass 1NT and not even think of
bidding 2S. On the hand in question West will rebid 2S because he has a six-card
suit and what is more his partner should know this. 2S should fail by a trick
because of the bad split but that has nothing to do with the bidding.
