When vulnerable it is advisable to have an opening or near opening hand so North is well worth his bid of 2♦, showing as it does both the majors. With trump length, an honour in partner’s second suit and an outside ace to boot South is clearly worth a jump to game, giving West a headache. 5♣ is only two down but in my opinion too dangerous at that vulnerability, although at favourable colours I would have no hesitation in bidding on.
