27th September – Board 21: North/South Vul.
Dealer North.
After West transfers to spades and makes a game try with 2NT showing about eleven points, East is fully justified in going to game with his ‘hard’ values and three-card trump support. If South leads a heart there is no problem, with declarer losing at most a heart, a spade and a club. But just suppose South leads a club. Now when declarer attacks trumps South can win and play a club to his partner who wins and plays back….. a low heart. Declarer is on a complete guess with no real reason to play the king – correct if North has the ace – or low – correct if North has the queen. And of course if he guesses wrong – ‘Sorry partner’ – the contract is defeated. And if declarer decides to duck the opening lead North must find his clever switch at trick two.
